How precise is the dial indicator? --- Evaluation of the standard graduation and the variation of the indicated value

July 14, 2026

The accuracy of a dial indicator is often understood as how many units can be read on the dial. However, this is merely the concept of the graduation value and does not equate to the actual measurement capability of the entire dial indicator. The common graduation value of a dial indicator is 0.01 millimeters. The circular dial usually has 100 equally divided scale readings, with each grid corresponding to a movement of 0.01 millimeters of the measuring rod. The graduation value of a micrometer can reach 0.001 millimeters, but a smaller graduation value does not necessarily mean that reliable results of the corresponding level can be obtained in all working conditions. The accuracy of a dial indicator needs to be judged in combination with indication error, indication variability, return error, measuring force, clamping rigidity, and the usage environment. Especially in scenarios such as mechanical processing, mold debugging, shaft runout detection, and assembly alignment, understanding these indicators is more important than simply looking at the dial scale.

I. How accurate is a micrometer? The accuracy cannot be determined solely by the graduation value.

1. The dial indicator is a general-purpose length measurement tool in the form of a gauge. It is often used for comparative measurement rather than directly replacing high-precision length standards. The graduation value of a common mechanical indicator is 0.01 millimeter, which means that when the pointer moves one small mark, the measuring rod undergoes a displacement of 0.01 millimeter. This reading capability is suitable for on-site judgment of the height difference of planes, axial runout, radial runout, parallelism adjustment, and assembly deviations.

2. The graduation value merely indicates the degree of refinement in reading, but it cannot directly represent the measurement error. For instance, a dial indicator with a graduation value of 0.01 millimeters can display readings accurate to one-hundredth of a millimeter. However, in actual use, it is also affected by factors such as the clearance of the rack and gear transmission, the friction of the pointer, the straightness of the measuring rod, the contact state of the measuring head, the rigidity of the bracket, and the reading perspective of the operator. Describing the graduation value as precision can easily lead to deviations in process judgment.

3. In industrial settings, dial indicators are often used for relative comparison measurements. For instance, by using gauge blocks, standard parts, or already processed reference surfaces to zero the indicator, and then observing the relative change values at the measured position. This measurement method can reduce some systematic errors and is more suitable for determining part runout, deflection, and clamping conditions. If a traceable size determination is required, it is also necessary to check the indication error and repeatability data in the verification certificate or calibration certificate of the dial indicator.

4. The accuracy of the dial indicator also depends on the range. Common ranges for micrometers include zero to three millimeters, zero to five millimeters, and zero to ten millimeters. Longer range micrometers are suitable for scenarios with large displacement changes, but they have a longer transmission chain and higher requirements for structural error control. During precise measurements, it is not recommended to let the pointer work continuously at the edge of the range. Usually, a small travel is pre-stressed before zeroing, and the measuring rod is placed in a more stable working range.

II. Tolerance Value Standards: How to Distinguish Between Micrometers, Dial Gauges and Digital Indicators

1.. The common tolerance value of a micrometer is 0.01 millimeter, which is suitable for general mechanical processing and assembly inspections. The circular dial of a micrometer typically represents one millimeter of displacement, and there are one hundred graduations on the dial, corresponding to one hundred readings of 0.01 millimeter each. For alignment work on lathes, milling machines, grinders, boring machines and assembly platforms, the micrometer can visually display the minute displacement changes of the workpiece or fixtures.

2. The common graduation value of a micrometer is 0.001 millimeter, with more precise readings, making it suitable for high-precision comparative measurements. The magnification mechanism of a micrometer is more sensitive, and it has higher requirements for vibration, dust, lateral force of the measuring rod, and stability of the bracket. If the processing site is subject to significant environmental vibrations, simply replacing with a micrometer may not necessarily yield more stable data. Instead, there may be situations such as pointer jitter and difficulty in judging the reading.

3. The digital indicator shows the displacement of the measuring rod in numerical form. Common resolutions include 0.01 millimeters, 0.005 millimeters, and 0.001 millimeters. The digital reading reduces the influence of parallax, making it convenient for data recording and quick reading. However, attention should still be paid to the indication error, repeatability, return error, and battery status. For digital indicators with higher resolution, they still need to be used in conjunction with stable supports and standardized measurement methods.

4. The selected graduation value should match the measured tolerance. If the workpiece tolerance is at the order of 0.1 millimeters, a dial indicator with a graduation value of 0.01 millimeters can usually meet the on-site adjustment requirements; if the tolerance approaches 0.01 millimeters, the measurement system's uncertainty factors need to be particularly controlled; if the tolerance is at the micrometer level, a regular dial indicator is usually not suitable as the main determination tool and should be combined with a micrometer, an air-powered measuring instrument, a comparator, or a dedicated measuring tool.

III. Indicated Error: One of the core indicators for evaluating the accuracy of a dial indicator

1.. Indicated Error refers to the difference between the reading obtained from the dial indicator and the standard displacement value. During verification or calibration, an indicator measuring instrument, a combination of gauge blocks, or other standard devices are typically used to cause the measuring rod to generate a known displacement at the specified measurement point. The deviation between the dial indicator reading and the standard value is then recorded. This indicator can reflect the combined errors of the transmission mechanism, the scale plate, the pointer, and the measuring rod system.

2. The indication error is not determined by a single point; instead, it should be evaluated based on the performance of different measurement segments. The error of the micrometer may vary at the zero position, the middle part of the measuring range, and the end of the measuring range. The gear meshing condition, the spring rebound force, and the friction of the measuring rod all affect the readings of each segment. The verification regulations set corresponding maximum allowable error items for indicating gauges with different graduation values and different measurement ranges to evaluate their metrological performance.

3. When using the equipment on-site, it is necessary to distinguish between the calibration data and the actual working condition data. Calibration is usually carried out in a stable environment and with standard equipment, while on-site measurements may be affected by machine vibrations, oil contamination, temperature fluctuations, fixture deformation, and observation angle errors. The qualification of the dial indicator certificate only indicates that the measurement performance meets the specified requirements, but it does not mean that any arbitrary clamping or reading can yield reliable results.

4. For processing and inspection, the closer the indication error is to the measured tolerance band, the higher the risk. Consider a common scenario: if the required runout of the measurement is 0.03 millimeters, and the adjustment is performed using a dial indicator with a graduation value of 0.01 millimeters, the rigidity of the support, the angle of the measuring head, and the stability of the reading will all significantly affect the judgment. At this time, the measuring rod direction should be made as consistent as possible with the direction of the measured displacement, and multiple reciprocating readings should be conducted for confirmation.
